Notary
A notary service is a professional service that involves a notary public, a legally authorized individual, witnessing the signing of important documents to verify their authenticity. Notary services are often used for legal documents such as contracts, affidavits, powers of attorney, deeds, and more.
Acknowledgement
An acknowledgment service provided by a notary is when the notary verifies that the signer of a document is doing so voluntarily and is aware of the document’s contents. In this process, the notary confirms the identity of the signer, typically by checking a valid ID, and witnesses the signing of the document. The signer must appear in person before the notary, who then records the acknowledgment in their notary journal and applies their official seal or stamp to the document.
The purpose of an acknowledgment is to ensure that the signer understands and agrees to the terms of the document without any coercion. This service is commonly used for deeds, mortgages, and other legal documents where it’s important to prove that the person signing is doing so willingly and knowingly.
Jurat
A Jurat service provided by a notary involves the notary administering an oath or affirmation to the signer of a document, confirming that the contents of the document are true and accurate to the best of their knowledge. In this service, the signer is required to appear before the notary and swear or affirm the truthfulness of the statement in the document. The notary then records the details of the oath and affirms the signing by applying their seal or stamp to the document.
Unlike an acknowledgment, which only verifies the identity of the signer and that they signed the document willingly, a jurat involves a formal declaration under oath, making the signer legally accountable for the truthfulness of the document's contents. This service is commonly used for affidavits, sworn statements, and other documents where the signer must legally attest to the accuracy of the information presented.
